Be careful with men with deep voices: this is the scientific reason why they tend to be more unfaithful

Although it may seem unrelated, men with deep voices are more likely to be unfaithful than those with a higher pitch. This has been concluded by researchers from the Southwest University of China in a study published in Science Direct.
The Chinese scientists wanted to check whether aspects that are determining factors in our prejudices about possible partners and that may imply attraction towards the other person, such as the voice, could ‘warn us’ of your level of commitment in a relationship.
To do this, they had the participation of 116 men and 145 women (all heterosexual) who had to say specific phrases to record their tones of voice, which were evaluated with three different parameters. Afterwards, they made a psychological analysis which included questions referring to his romantic relationships and his fidelity, according to publications Guardian.
While with women they did not find any connection between different voice tones and fidelity, they did obtain interesting data in the case of men: “The results showed that, in men, F0 and F0-sd (lower range voices) were significantly negatively correlated with the intention of infidelity”.
Biological basis
The article cites different studies that could justify the results of this research at a biological level.
The men with Deeper voices generally have higher testosterone levels. On the one hand, according to these scientists, “higher testosterone levels are positively correlated with greater interest in sex outside of the relationship,” as is the case with women with high estrogen levels.
The link between the lower tone of the voice and testosterone also means that women feel more sexually attracted, since higher testosterone is related to having healthier children. The possibility of having relationships with more women could be the reason why “men with higher levels of testosterone tend to report more sexual partners outside the couple.”
Similarly, “testosterone levels are negatively correlated with couples’ relationship quality, and higher testosterone levels interfere with romantic relationship functioning by reducing relationship-promoting behaviors,” the article reads. .
Biases
The researchers acknowledge the limitations of the study, starting with the group of volunteers from which they took the data. “The participants were college students with a narrow age range, the duration of their relationships was relatively short, and their mating dynamics and concept of marriage varied considerably from that of older adults.”
For that reason they stated that “future work should reproduce these results in different populations.”
A second important bias is that the study “relies primarily on research conducted in Western culturesbecause few studies have examined vocal characteristics based on Chinese participants.”
In this way, scientists open the door for this line of research to continue but by opening up the age groups “and even the hormonal levels of the participants.”
