Make a wardrobe change with the Marie Kondo method: what do we keep and how?
Autumn has arrived and with it, temperatures are dropping. Little by little we are replacing summer clothes with warmer ones and the time for the, sometimes exasperating, wardrobe change is approaching.
The order guru Marie Kondo He is one of the people who knows the most and talks about the subject. From a very early age she began organizing the entire family’s closets and, over time, this curious passion became her job. Now, she helps people around the world organize their homes through the KonMari method.
This is precisely what we are going to follow to change our wardrobe and take advantage of it to organize everything. Let’s go in order:
Where do I begin?
The first step is to decide When will you change your wardrobe?. Find a time with time, since you will need quite a bit. Try to take advantage of a time when there is no one who can distract you and where you are not mixed up with other responsibilities.
Once decided and that moment has arrived, it’s time to empty the closet. But first he prepares three bags or boxes. You will use them to classify clothes into “throw away”, “donate” and “keep”.
Put on some music or a fun podcast and take all your clothes out of the closet. Take advantage and clean the entire inside. There is a lot of dirt that we don’t clean on a daily basis, get rid of it!
What are you left with?
Once we have all the clothes out, it’s time divide it into categories (shorts, skirts, t-shirts…).
What stays and what doesn’t? This is one of the most difficult questions we face when changing our wardrobe.
To decide, give each object its time and ask yourself when was the last time you used it. Stay only with those clothes that you wear and inspire you happiness. Also, do not keep clothes that you feel ashamed to throw away, arguing that you will use them to be around the house. Fix or recycle damaged clothing.
According to Marie Kondo, not throwing away certain objects is a way of holding on to the past, to the person we were without accepting the person we are today. Don’t hold on and let go with gratitude. In addition, probably what you don’t use can be used by someone else.
And now it’s time to be realistic, how likely are you to need shorts in autumn/winter? And a mini beach dress? You can leave a couple of outfits on hand in case you need them for a trip express. But don’t waste space!
Declutter with Marie Kondo
The KonMari method leaves us with some tricks that you can surely apply when you change your wardrobe:
- Save by categories. Divide the clothes according to the item: pants, t-shirts, dresses… And take this change to the closet. T-shirts in the first drawer, sweaters on a shelf…
- Pesos. Hang only what needs to be hung and organize the rest, leaving the heaviest on the left and the lightest on the right.
- Sort by colors and fabrics. Within each category, organize the clothes by putting together items of the same fabrics and colors.
- Fold well and store upright. The KonMari method proposes folding items such as t-shirts in thirds. That is, instead of folding t-shirts with the sleeves inward and in two, Marie Kondo suggests doing it in three. The resulting package will allow you to place them vertically in the drawer and thus save space.
- Baskets and jewelry boxes for accessories. Just like clothes, accessories need their space. Therefore, classify them and store them in small baskets and jewelry boxes.
- Bags and purses. If you are going to store the bags inside the closet, the KonMari method suggests storing them inside each other. Also, take advantage of the different lengths of the straps to hang them.
The hanger trick
You already have your closet organized, so now all that’s left to do is enjoy everything that awaits this new season.
But if you want some more advice to know what you really use and what you don’t for future wardrobe changes, cleanings… We suggest that you apply the hanger trick.
When you put on an item of clothing and put it away again, turn the hanger over. This way you will know which clothes you really use and which you don’t.
