Pioneering clinic in Malaga in Oncothermia-Nanothermia, cancer treatment
We are at Cellumed Clinic to speak with Dr Juan Doblas from the Integrative Oncology unit of this Marbellí Clinic, an international reference medical center that introduced Oncothermia in Spain, an advanced treatment for localized tumors without side effects, directed by an oncological team. expert, who also offers different medical and biological specialties, with numerous cutting-edge therapies.
A few days ago different media outlets were summoned by the Valdecilla Public Hospital (Santander) to talk about the application of Oncothermia for the treatment of cancer. The Minister of Health, Luisa Real, joined the press release accompanied by the manager of the HUMV, Julio Pascual, and the doctors of the hospital’s radio oncology team. In this statement they state that Oncothermia is indicated for the treatment of even tumors with the worst prognosis and that it is an advanced treatment compared to conventional hyperthermia that cannot be applied to all tumors.
You were working with the Cellumed Clinic team when the medical center introduced the first Oncothermia in Spain, could you explain a little about the information provided by the Valdecilla Hospital?
Evidently there are tumors in delicate areas that do not allow global warming, as occurs in certain areas of the brain. Therefore, in certain cases, hyperthermia that homogeneously heats the tumor from the outside may be unfeasible for certain tumors, as indicated by the hospital’s radio oncology team.
What advantages does Oncothermia provide?
There is a big difference. Although both are hyperthermias because they produce heat, Oncothermia does so at a nanoscopic level, which is why this advanced method is called Nanothermia.
It works with four forms of cell selection and with modulated electro energy, which is a world patent of Oncotherm (mEHT), which penetrates the doses that each tumor needs.
The heat, in short, is caused by the molecular shock that occurs exclusively inside the malignant cells, different from the homogeneous heating produced by common hyperthermias. Macro heating attracts excess blood flow and, consequently, the delivery of nutrients to the tumor.
A treatment at a nanoscopic level controls blood flow and avoids the risk of dissemination or metastasis.
On the other hand, Oncothermia does not generate necrosis, which is toxic to the body, it eliminates cancer cells through apoptosis, which means the self-destruction of cancer cells, a clean immunogenic death.
Dr. Doblas, Oncothermia is in the news now, however, since when have you been working with these teams at Cellumed clinic?
For quite a few years now. I started working more than 6 years ago. Our clinic was the pioneer in introducing this technology then unknown in Spain. However, it had been used for 25 years in more than 32 countries in Europe, Asia, South Africa, Canada, Australia, etc. Germany in Europe was the spearhead of this technology with more than 150 devices in clinics, as well as public and private hospitals.
Could it therefore be said that you are the medical center with the most experience in the application of your protocols, and that the treatment is safe?
Of course the treatment is safe. In our long experience we have seen a wide variety of solid tumors. In Spain we are the clinic with the longest track record in its application. Thousands of cases treated with oncothermia have been published worldwide without relevant toxicities derived from the treatment and without side effects. At most, and very rarely, mild erythema occurs in 1% to 3%.
What is your experience with this treatment and what type of tumors can you treat?
We can treat any type of tumor as long as it is local and solid (that is, leukemia cannot be treated, for these cases we have another technology). With nanothermia, even inoperable primary and metastatic cancers can be treated. In my experience, coming from public health and operating on many tumors, I understand that it is an important tool, since when combined with known oncological treatments, it enhances them and achieves better results and higher expectations.
In many cases they come to see us when conventional treatment has not worked or they have become resistant. In this case, it is used as monotherapy or with a combination of other complementary treatments and immunotherapy, but whenever possible we advise starting the treatment when you are undergoing or are going to start the oncological treatment, so that it acts in synergy and optimizes the response.
Are there scientific publications that support this technology?
Obviously, otherwise it would not be in public clinics and hospitals in many countries. It is a variant of hyperthermia, but we do not rely on publications that generally talk about hyperthermia, because there are many types, even a physiotherapist can work with hyperthermia, which is ultimately heat. However, Oncothermia has published demonstrating the effect of tumor apoptosis and on the electromodulated energy mEHT nano-heating method that is patented by Oncotherm, and they have specifically made more than 10,000 publications with this equipment. There are important randomized studies such as the one on grade IV bladder cancer, recently carried out by the Johannesburg public hospital, with more than 200 patients.
Dr. Doblas, what do you advise the cancer patient who is reading this news?
You can ask us for a second opinion without cost or obligation. Cancer patients do not have to abandon their cancer treatment, but they can combine it to have a greater response and, above all, improve their quality of life. We offer the possibility of evaluating your oncological reports at no cost to see if it is treatable, how to approach the treatment and to be able to advise you beforehand.
Oncothermia has many advantages. In addition to causing death to cancer cells, it increases the immune system and the patient’s quality of life.
It has an abscopal effect, so you understand what I mean, it is an effect similar to that of vaccination. By not generating necrosis, dead cells are recognized by the immune system, which can detect and attack if they appear in another part distant from the tumor, thus helping to prevent metastasis.
Can you tell us how many doctors are trained in this method at the Puerto Banús clinic?
I believe that all or almost all of them have had Nanothermia training, but in the prescription and control of patients we are mainly: a radiation oncologist with more than 45 years of experience in the oncological area, an oncopathologist and me, who is a general surgeon and oncology.
You also have doctoral courses and accreditation that allows you to carry out research, is that correct?
Yes, I have doctoral courses that have granted me research proficiency. I am the author of national and international publications in high-impact magazines, of the book “Surgical Emergencies in Primary Care,” and of numerous national and international presentations.
He has also been a Master’s professor in endoscopic surgery and carries out different activities and functions related to medicine.…
Indeed. I am a member of the Surgical Institute of Andalusia (IQA) and co-founder of the Andalusian Coloptoctology Group, ASAC. I belong as a member to different associations and was an elected member of Postgraduate Physicians of the Official College of Physicians of Malaga, among other functions that would be a bit long to list.
Finally, Oncothermia with its method based on nanothermia can help many cancer patients. Let us remember, then, that you can request a second opinion and be evaluated by the Cellumed Clinic oncology team at no cost to see if you can perform this treatment.
