Susana Cala: “My first album talks about my process after ending a very long courtship”

Colombian composer and singer, Susana Cala He has one of those voices that, as soon as you hear it, you understand the success of his career. At only 25 years old, she has participated in compositions for great artists such as Andrés Cepeda or Sweet California.

He is also behind many of the songs of one of the most successful groups in the current music industry: Morat. A group with whom he has a very special connection, since Juan Pablo Izada, the voice and one of the guitars of the group, is his older brother.

They both work hand in hand composing songs: both for his band and for Susana’s new musical project, their first EP titled: ‘Without a Good Morning Message’.

This new work is made up of five very special songs for Susana, which takes us on a journey of emotions going through love, heartbreak, anger, the tranquility of being alone and the fear of falling in love again.

Each of the songs has a visual support and the five videos were recorded in the same house, since the intention was to have the same universe during the development of the EP that changed. depending on the stage (the feeling/the song).

From magasIN we have had the opportunity to speak with Susana Cala, who has told us how she feels after the release of her first EP and about the songwriting process.

How Susana Cala defines herself

Well, I define myself as a very sensitive, hard-working, very passionate and very intense person. On the other hand, when I like something and want to do it, I’m a little stubborn too.

You have just released your first EP ‘Sin Message de Buenos Días’, how do you feel about this new adventure?

I’m very excited because it’s the first time I have something physical. It comes out in vinyl format, so it seems like the most divine thing in the world to me. And now put together everything that has come out and add to it the latest song that I have released, which is called ‘Formula 1′that I love.

Besides, I’m very excited, it’s like a little baby. that one has been doing and putting together for a long time, so I am very excited to see how people react.

What is ‘No Good Morning Message’ about?

‘No good morning message’, talks about my breakup. I had a very long boyfriend and he talks about my time, my time of being single, because I lasted a long time in that relationship, so I hadn’t been single for a long time.

It’s going from love, a chocolatey love, which is the story I tell in the song ’40 degrees’ to ‘Laziness’, which is being very sad and very bad, that moment where you need that good morning message that you no longer have. ‘It’s not that big of a deal’ It’s when your friends arrive and tell you, that’s it, up, no more.

‘Undefined time’, which is the fourth song, it is the song that was most difficult for me to write because it does not talk about love or heartbreak. It’s a song that talks about one, how I’m fine alone and how I have to be fine alone because that’s what I have to do now.

And finally, ‘Formula 1’talks about when you start talking to someone again and the fear you get of talking to someone again because it makes you dizzy to start all over again.

In this project you touch on all the topics a little, what do you like to write about the most and what do you consider to be the most difficult?

If we find that it is easier to write everything that has to do with love or lack of love, it is easier to write because it is a universal feeling, that everyone feels and that it is not necessary to be very specific for people to connect with it. . That’s why I think my favorite song on the EP is ‘Undefined time’, which is the one that doesn’t talk about either of them, because there aren’t many songs that are like that.

I needed it and I feel that there are people who need them, which is like no, I don’t want to be in love, I’m not sad either, I need a song to fill that kind of void that exists in music. Regarding the songs that I liked writing the most, not only within the EP, but in general, they are songs that do not talk about love.

You talk about a very personal story in these songs, how do you feel when you get on stage and see the audience singing them and making them their own?

Ugh, it’s very strong. It happened to me especially with ‘Laziness’, which is the second song on the EP, which is the saddest song, which I literally wrote two or three weeks after breaking up. I was with two friends writing it, and I had to stop to go to the bathroom to cry and continue.

Because you are writing something that you have not even processed, so it is very strong. But I think what you say is the most beautiful thing. When you do this, you do it a little selfishly, thinking: “I need to do catharsis and get all this out.”

The moment someone else sends me a message on Instagram saying “Susana, the same thing happened to me. I just broke up with my boyfriend of ten years. “I’m feeling this song.” That’s all that’s good and all I need.

What is the process of composing a song like?

The truth is that there is no recipe. There are songs that start from a guitar, others from a phrase or with a producer making a beat and the artist singing over things. It also depends on the genre or the environment.

My recommendation for someone who wants to start writing a song is to put ‘urban pop beat’ on YouTube, press play and start babbling melodies and things to see what you come up with.

What difference do you find between composing your own songs for yourself and composing for others?

It depends a lot on the way in which the composition arises. There are times when the artist is present during the session. That to me is the most fun and the easiest thing in quotes, because you have the person saying I want to tell you this, I’m feeling like this.

Let’s do something that goes this way, that sounds like this. And it’s very nice because it’s another way of writing.

When I write for myself, I write how I feel and what I have experienced. Here it is literally putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and trying to get into that person’s head and get as much information out of them as possible to be able to build something.

When the person or when the artist is not there, I try to think about what I think a song by this person would sound like, which is also a great exercise, because I I think that composing, like any other job, is a job of gaining muscle. and to understand how to be clearer and connect more with people.

Do you think the composer’s work is a little underrated?

It’s true, but notice that I don’t feel bad. There is also one thing that is becoming more common lately and that is for people to look at the credits of the song. I think that it is nice to recognize the work of composers and I also think that the artists themselves should do it.

Your brother, Juan Pablo Izada, has participated in the composition of several songs on your EP. How is it to work with him?

I love working with my brother, really. These songs were a little different because I started writing them without him and he intervened later. He has a great talent for taking songs and saying “Ok, I love this, that word too, that could be better…”

It’s like a song retoucher that makes the song immediately feel rounder and more finished. So he helps me a lot. We are almost a composition team, both he in my project and me in Morat’s. That’s great, I love working with him.

Does it happen to you a lot, within the music industry, that you are referred to as “the sister of”?

It happens a lot within the music industry, but in the end it is inevitable. It is inevitable that you will be associated with someone who does the same among your family, especially my brother, who has been around longer than me because he is older than me.

I am fortunate that I like what he does and that I admire him. If they associated me with something that I didn’t like, I would hate it, but I am lucky that they associate me with something that I like and we also work together so much that when they speak well of Morat I feel that they are speaking well of me. I feel like there is a part of me in his group, just like he does with my project.

Tell us a nice anecdote that you remember from your career.

There are many moments, but a very funny one comes to mind when my first song came out called ‘Sunday’. Just the day before I had to record a songwriting session with Sebastian Yatra, I didn’t know him, and I went to his house to talk and try to write a topic.

That day at 12 at night my song came out and the session lasted a lot because we did like two songs. When twelve o’clock arrived and the topic came up, I started crying like a little girl.

He immediately hugged me, he was very tender with me. The moment of when my first song came out I will never forget it. First because the situation was surreal, and above all because at that time it was a song, whose release was greatly delayed due to the pandemic, so I was looking forward to it coming out.

Fulfill a dream

There are many very big dreams that I want to fulfill, but I am going to tell you a few closer ones and that is to play in my country, Colombia. I’ve done little things, but not a big show, and that’s what I want to do. I want to sing with my parents in front of me.

Which artist would you like to collaborate with?

There are many, but I’m going to tell you two. I would like to collaborate with a Colombian artist, who is, incredible, her name is Elsa and the Sea Here in Spain I would like to do something with Paula Cendejasthat I love.

What are your influences when making music?

I grew up listening to Joaquín Sabina because my dad loved it, so yes, Joaquín Sabina without a doubt. Drexler or Charly García too. I love that whole universe because I feel that it connects with me, the way of writing the songs, of telling it, I love it.
