In the midst of an omicron explosion – in Spain a new record of infections has just been broken since New Year’s Eve – and when there are still no clear forecasts about the end of this sixth wave, there are already new threats. First there were the first cases of ‘flurona’, coinfection with Covid-19 and now there is talk of a new variant of the coronavirus: Ihu.
French scientists are studying this new strain of covid, which would have up to 46 mutations. According to ABC, the results have been pre-published on ‘medRxiv’, and they analyze 12 patients with coronavirus who lived in the same geographical area of France. In the tests carried out, mutations were detected that showed an “atypical combination.” The cases affected by the Ihu variant could be related to a trip to Cameroon.
Their analysis revealed 46 mutations and 37 deletions (genetic change) and according to the researchers, these data are an example of the unpredictability of the appearance of SARS-CoV-2 variants and their introduction into a certain geographic area from abroad.
These studies are for now initial and the Ihu variant of covid has not yet been considered of interest by the health authorities, but its evolution will continue to be closely studied.
